Union Women Help 'Spread the Word' About One of the Leading Killers of Women

In celebration of National Women's Health Week, the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) is teaming up with the Spread the Word campaign to increase awareness about the overlooked symptoms of coronary artery disease (CAD), one of the leading killers of women worldwide. The campaign also is designed to inform women of testing options that help spot CAD early and improve medical outcomes. CAD kills more women than all cancers combined but is often harder to diagnose among women than men.

Taxi riders in Newark, N.J., can now enjoy the convenience of using a cellphone app to book a cab while resting secure in the knowledge that the dispatched driver is licensed and insured, and that the vehicle they are about to get into has been inspected and regularly maintained.

Union Plus Scholarship Deadline Is Jan. 31

Time is running out to apply for the 2015 Union Plus college scholarship program for union members and their children. Applications must be submitted by noon Eastern time on Jan. 31. Since 1992, the program has awarded more than $3.6 million to students of more than 2,400 working families. The awards will range from $500 to $4,000 and are for study beginning in the fall each year. Students may re-apply each year.

Transport Worker Veterans Seek to Unify Across the Country

In 2014, the Transport Workers (TWU) union has increased its focus on veterans, particularly through the Veterans Committee's three-day conference, which seeks to unify and empower veterans and support the creation of veterans committees at locals across the country. In the past, the Veterans Committee focused more on service projects and fundraising, but it is shifting toward a more legislative agenda with a concentration on issues that affect veterans.
