Retired Machinist Makes Life More Comfortable for Young Patients

If you visit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, you'll see the familiar red wagons that help make life a little easier for young patients who take comfort from the wagons in the unfamiliar environment of the hospital. More than a year ago, retired Machinists (IAM) member Roger Leggett started making the wagons even more useful, when he invented "Chad's Bracket," which allows the wagons to be used by children who need an IV pole with them.

TWU Members Make a Difference in the Lives of Veterans

Transport Workers (TWU) members across the country helped raise more than $72,000 in donations and gifts for Operation Military Embrace this holiday season. Working people belonging to TWU collected countless Christmas gifts, including toys, clothing and shoes, for veterans and their families in honor of Brother Hank Trujillo, former chairman of the TWU Veterans Committee and a Vietnam veteran, who passed away earlier this year.

Ann Arbor IBEW Local Champions the Intersection of Apprenticeship, Green Energy Progress

In Ann Arbor, two 30-foot wind turbines and a bank of 60 solar panels line the entrance of the Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 252 training center, where apprentices learn skills that keep the union on the forefront of green energy while lowering their electrical bills. A recent open house, featured in The Building Tradesman Newspaper, showcased the new 16.8 kilowatt (KW) solar array, 2.4 KW wind turbines and the car battery charging station that are now permanent features of the training center. The wind and solar curriculum taught by the Local 252 is part of the $1.5 million the union spends annually on training.

Fire Fighters and Nationwide Insurance Partner to Make Trick-or-Treat Tradition Safer for Children

The Fire Fighters (IAFF) and Nationwide Insurance announced a new partnership through Nationwide’s Make Safe Happen program. The two organizations are teaming up to make Halloween safer in communities across North America. Through the partnership, the IAFF and Nationwide distributed 25,000 trick-or-treat bags to families, along with important safety tips.

Firsthand Account: Union Members Evacuate Metro Riders Seamlessly

On Tuesday night, I left the AFL-CIO offices in downtown Washington, D.C., hopped a bus to Columbia Heights and planned to transfer to another bus and make my way home. The wait was 15 minutes, though, and I knew that to take the Metro at Columbia Heights station one stop to the Georgia Avenue-Petworth station, the one closest to my house, and the walk afterward would take a little less time. So I jumped on the train, which was waiting for me in the station, and got ready for a train ride that normally takes less than five minutes. Two hours later, when I walked out of the Georgia Avenue station, amid the emergency vehicles, most I've ever seen in my life, needless to say, I wasn't having the best night of my life.
