New Jersey Union Sportsmen Build Bird Condos

As part of the Union Sportsmen's Alliance's Work Boots on the Ground project, New Jersey union members built and painted 52 pheasant and 10 quail transport boxes to support the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, which raises and releases some 50,000 pheasants and 11,000 quail annually across the state.

‘Yarns of Love’ Help Knit Tight Community Connections

It can get mighty cold this time of year in Genesee County, Mich., and it can feel even colder if you’re a kid who doesn’t have warm clothing while waiting for an early morning school bus or building a snow fort.

But thousands of Flint-area youngsters have been able to ward off winter’s chill with hand-made hats, scarves and mittens, thanks to a unique “Yarns of Love” program, says Cindy Cromwell, the Greater Flint Labor Council’s Community Services liaison to Genesee County United Way.

Union Members Build Accessibility Ramp for a Teenager in Michigan

On the Saturday morning of Oct. 12, an unusually bright and warm fall day, 24 union volunteers gathered in Pinconning, Mich. Their goal was to build a handicap accessible ramp at the home of Ron Rulapaugh, whose 13-year-old grandson became a quadriplegic after a diving accident in August. The teenager went through surgery during the summer, but a ramp had to be in place before he could be released from the facility where he is currently undergoing therapy.

Spring Hill UAW Members Collect Truckloads of Supplies for Tornado Survivors

When Jim Pulley, a UAW member in Spring Hill, Tenn., saw the devastation caused by the tornadoes that hit Moore, Okla., he jumped into action and set up collection boxes at all of the General Motors Co. (GM) plant entrances in his hometown. His union, Local 1853, expanded on his initiative by involving its Community Services Committee. GM and community groups also got involved. Ten days later, the combined efforts of the union and the community resulted in three semi-trailer truckloads of supplies headed to help the tornado survivors.

Reconnecting McDowell Makes Great Strides in Improving Education in West Virginia County

The AFT has been a partner in helping revitalize McDowell County, W.Va., for more than a year now, and those efforts are paying major dividends for the local education system. On Wednesday, the West Virginia Board of Education unanimously approved a community schools plan for McDowell County Public Schools. In a separate vote, the state board also voted to return the county's schools to local control. The board had taken control of the schools in an attempt to save them from the poor conditions the county was experiencing.

Georgia Power Buys Ad to Honor IBEW Members for Sandy Response

Georgia Power, one of the largest utilities companies in the South, took out a full-page ad in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution honoring the contribution of Electrical Workers (IBEW) who jumped into action and helped out during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  The rare instance of a corporation lauding union members in a major press outlet was a reaction to a resolution honoring the members of IBEW Local 84 that the state legislature passed at the request of the Georgia AFL-CIO.
