In a huge victory graduate workers at Columbia gave a booming #gradunionyes. This after the university denied even recognizing their graduate teaching and research assistants as workers. Yes, not only are graduate workers at Columbia workers, but more importantly, now they are organized workers.

It is the FIRST win for a graduate worker union at a private university won through an official NLRB election. Now they stand 3,500 strong.

NYU Grad Employees Ratify Historic Contract

New York University graduate employees—members of Graduate Student Organizing Committee UAW Local 2110—successfully capped a struggle that began at the turn of this century when they ratified a five year contract with the university. Democracy Is Back for NYU Graduate Employees

The UAW reports that graduate employees have reached an “unprecedented agreement with New York University in which the administration will remain neutral and respect the results of an election for more than 1,200 GAs, TAs and RAs [graduate assistants, teaching assistants and research assistants] to vote on union representation." The election is expected to take place Dec. 10 and 11.

NYU Graduate Employees Call for Fair Election, Not More Legal Action

More than 1,100 graduate student employees at New York University (NYU) and NYU-Poly have signed and delivered a letter to the university’s administration urging the school to respect their choice to join a union.

The letter was delivered in anticipation of a decision by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that could reverse a 2004 decision by the then Bush-administration-controlled NLRB holding that graduate teaching and research assistants at private universities were not employees protected by federal labor law.
